OK...
here's the daily ritual:

Start up the PC.

AOM automatically comes up, bit the little sand/eg-timer just sits there, and then it the window tells me 'AOL does not respond'.
I shut it down.
the AOL re-start option box comes up. I click 're-start'.

During the day, even with no window open, no search engines active, the PC is constantly whirring and occasionally clicking, as if a spyware programme were running...though to all intents and purposes, nothing is....

I have every conceivable spyware/firewall programme as recommended by this site....

Ad-Aware
Spybot Search & Destroy
Javacools SpywareBlaster
Panda ActiveScan -IE
BitDefender Online Scanner - IE
ZoneAlarm
AVG latest edition
HJT
Ewido
Webroot Spy sweeper

In the evening, I close everything down, and click on shut down.

I get nothing happening but the sand/egg timer just sitting there...

I know through experience that if I turn off the screen, it will still be there in the morning, so....
I select 'Cont+Alt+delete'
wait for the finish tasks box to come up....
(There's nothing running because i've closed it all down....so the 'finish task' box is empty) go to the stop/finish/close? option (it's in French, so it's 'Arreter?')
select 'disactivate'

Everything closes as normal, except that I get two grey boxes telling me specific programmes are closing down, but once these complete, they tell me the programmes are not responding, and to finish now. In fact, I select and click the 'terminer maintenant' button the moment they come up, or else I know that they'll just pop up again anyway..... The PC then resumes closing down - until I get to the 'Windows is closing down' blue screen....

Then I have to unplug the PC, or that too, will stay up all night.

So....
What does any Technically-minded genius make of all this?

(I have also posted this above poser elsewhere, to cover all my bases - !!)

    Try this:
    • Go to Start > Run > type: MSCONFIG
    • Click on the startup tab
    • Click on Disable All
    • Click on Apply >> Close
    • Restart the computer

    Let the computer reboot and see if there is any change. Do one more proper shut down just to double-check.

    If the comp shuts down with no problem, then enable everything one by one through MSCONFIG to see if any program is hanging.

    Soproc
    Winremote

    but there are 28 other start-up programmes ticked....
    this is going to take too long - !!

    isn't there an easier way - ??

    The panda log is mainly fine, just some harmless cookies. There is this one line:
    Potentially unwanted tool:Application/MyWebSearch Not disinfected C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\NPMySrch.dll
    If you downloaded or put that plugin there intentionally, thats fine. If not and you want to remove it, do the following: Note: I would remove it as it is associated with the MyWebSearch parasite

    Go to Start > Run > type: appwiz.cpl. From the list, uninstall the following, if found:

    My Web Search (Smiley Central or FWP product as applicable)
    My Way Speedbar (Smiley Central or other FWP as applicable)
    My Way Speedbar (AOL and Yahoo Messengers) (beta users only)
    My Way Speedbar (Outlook, Outlook Express, and IncrediMail)
    Search Assistant - My Way


    Find and Delete the following:

    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\NPMySrch.dll << this file

    I have removed the following:
    iTuneshelper
    Soproc
    Winremote

    but there are 28 other start-up programmes ticked....
    this is going to take too long - !!

    isn't there an easier way - ??

    The programmes you've highlighted in red, were not in the list of installed programmes, so I would guess they're not there at all...

    as to finding and deleting the MFirefox plugin NPMySrch.dll...

    When I typed in the exact reference you gave me, to uninstall it, it told me it's located in a different location, which is inaccessible.... and to either make sure my hard-disk is correctly installed....Can't give you a more accurate message, as it's all in French, but the gist of it is that it's elsewhere... and I can't delete it.....
    WTF....??

    You're going to have to talk me through this one very gently....

    First, lets starts by viewing hidden files and folders.
    • Click Start.
    • Open My Computer.
    • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    • Select the View Tab.
    • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    • Click Yes to confirm.
    • Click OK.

    Next, follow this location, using My Computer until you see the file:

    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\NPMySrch.dll

    When found, delete it.


    Also, can you tell me the name of the other folder please.

    OK....I'm just about ready to give up....

    I am sooooo frustrated - more by my own technological inadequacy than anything else - !!

    I deleted an item off msconfig start-up programmes this morning...(I now have 27 automatically activated start-up items, and four inactive-disabled.....) I had to obviously re-boot the PC to confirm the command.... and closing down, five minutes after I had booted up, took as long as it does in the evening....


    What the heck has gotten into my PC that makes it do this - !?!

    Someone said my AOL browser should be removed....

    I Quote:

    WTF is all that about - ?
    That's how I surf the internet.... through an AOL ADSL connection....! What do I do, then??

    When I last did a panda active scan it found two potential hacking routes and several other problems (running into the hundreds....) It asks me if I want to cure these problems...But the instructions I got (from the person who posted all the instructions on how to rid the PC of gremlins), are to merely send the report.... but if nobody checks the report and deals with it on my behalf, those problems remain in the PC...Should I not just instruct panda to deal with the problems and delete same - ??:banghead: :hiding: :banghead:

    AOL maybe the cause of this, not sure. I know a lot of people have had problems with AOL. Try disabling anything to do with AOL through MSCONFIG and see what happens.

    Just because you have AOL as your Internet Service Provider (ISP), that doesn't mean you can't use other browsers. Have you tried IE?

    When I last did a panda active scan it found two potential hacking routes and several other problems (running into the hundreds....) It asks me if I want to cure these problems...But the instructions I got (from the person who posted all the instructions on how to rid the PC of gremlins), are to merely send the report.... but if nobody checks the report and deals with it on my behalf, those problems remain in the PC...Should I not just instruct panda to deal with the problems and delete same - ??

    Post the Panda log here, if it cannot delete whatever.

    Panda CAN delete, I have just never been advised to follow this route by the person who recommended it....They just said 'send the report' but if you think it will be safe to get panda to delete it, I will just instruct it to do so.

    IE is not our main search engine - the founder of this forum (whom I know from elsewhere) recommends I use Mozilla Firefox instead.

    Is it safe to request panda delete problems found?

    can I just by-pass sending a printout of the problems to someone else, and just instruct deletion when prompted to do so, whilst using panda?


    or shall I copy and send a report, as well as getting panda to delete?

    please be specific - I am about to run a complete system check - !! thanks!!

    Panda will find items that should not be there. It will NOT necessarily fix/clean everything it finds, but it may do on certain infections.

    It is safe for Panda to clean what it can, but as I said it won't clean everything, so I advise to post a log here and I will have a look at it for you.

    It's in the middle of an ad-aware full system scan, right now, and it's about 20 minutes into the scan, so I'm afraid it's going to be a little while - but I will post it today, plus a hyjackthis log....I'm ever so grateful for all assistance... if I haven't said that already, I should have done...

    Panda and Ewido are only finding harmless cookies. Ewido has cleaned the ones it has found. Use the following tool to clean the Cookies, temp files, etc.

    Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune
    It is a stand-alone program that does not need to be "installed". Save it to a convenient location; your desktop would be a better place.

    Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe
    Under Main choose:
    Windows Temp
    Current User Temp
    All Users Temp
    Temporary Internet Files
    Prefetch
    Java Cache
    *The other boxes are optional*
    Then click the Empty Selected button.

    Firefox:
    Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

    Opera:
    Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
    NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

    Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

    For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu
